THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS MAKING BILLIONS. BUT WHO IS REALLY BENEFITING?

The latest Q3 2026 earnings reports are in, and the numbers tell a fascinating story: the music business continues to grow, even as the broader economy faces uncertainty.

Spotify, Universal Music Group, SiriusXM, and Deezer are reporting stronger financial performance, improved profitability, and increasingly sophisticated business strategies.

But there's a question worth asking:

Is the success of the music industry translating into greater prosperity for the people who actually create the music?

Let's look at the numbers.

SPOTIFY: $5.63 BILLION IN QUARTERLY REVENUE

Spotify added 6 million premium subscribers, bringing its global monthly active users to 788 million.

Revenue increased 14% in constant currency, while gross margins reached a record 33%.

The company is becoming increasingly efficient at turning listeners into revenue.

But for independent artists, the challenge remains: how much of that growing revenue actually reaches the creators?

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP: $3.9 BILLION

UMG reported an 11.7% revenue increase, fueled by streaming subscriptions, physical sales, and its acquisition of Downtown Music.

Subscription and streaming revenue grew 17.9%, including Downtown's contribution.

It's an impressive performance. But acquisitions also mean consolidation, raising important questions about competition, negotiating power, and opportunities for independent creators.

SIRIUSXM: $2.15 BILLION

SiriusXM reported quarterly revenue of approximately $2.15 billion.

Interestingly, podcast advertising revenue increased 20%, demonstrating how audio entertainment continues expanding beyond traditional music consumption.

DEEZER: APPROXIMATELY $154 MILLION

Deezer reported modest revenue growth while prioritizing direct subscribers, profitability, and higher-value customer relationships.

Its strategy offers an interesting alternative: growth doesn't always mean chasing the largest possible audience. Sometimes it means creating more value from the audience you already have.

SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN FOR MUSIC CREATORS?

The industry is generating enormous amounts of money. Streaming subscriptions are growing. Platforms are improving margins. Major companies are acquiring businesses and expanding their influence.

Yet the fundamental challenges facing independent artists remain remarkably familiar:

• Getting discovered in an overcrowded marketplace.

• Generating meaningful income from streaming.

• Maintaining ownership and control of their work.

• Building sustainable careers without depending entirely on algorithms.

The financial health of music companies matters. A growing industry creates opportunities.

But corporate revenue growth and creator prosperity are not necessarily the same thing.

Perhaps the most important measurement of a healthy music industry shouldn't simply be how much money its biggest companies generate, but how many musicians can actually make a living creating music.

What do you think? Is the music industry's financial success reaching the creators, or are we measuring success with the wrong numbers?
