RJ Create welcomed master percussionist Luisito Quintero to its offices for an evening of conversation, musical history, and live performance. Bringing together stories from decades in the music industry and an intimate demonstration of his craft, the gathering offered guests a closer look at the experiences and creativity behind his work.
The evening began with a conversation between Luisito and RJ Create co-founder Roman Rojas, exploring his career and the many artists he has had the opportunity to work alongside. From Celia Cruz, Franco De Vita to Chick Corea, amongst others, the discussion touched on some of the defining experiences of his time in the industry. To accompany the conversation, guests watched videos from past performances, revisiting different moments throughout his career and seeing firsthand the range of his musicianship.
Following the interview, Luisito shifted the focus from storytelling to demonstration, introducing a collection of percussion instruments he has gathered throughout nearly 30 years of touring. His setup included an assortment of air-driven instruments from Japan, Africa, and Latin America, as well as a cajón, a loop pedal, and a kalimba. One by one, he explored their sounds, showing how different textures and rhythms could come together to create something entirely new.
The evening took an unexpected turn when Luisito began building a loop and invited singer-songwriter and RJ Create Production Assistant Dana Arocha to join him. With no rehearsal or prior arrangement, Dana began singing over the rhythm, and the two developed an entirely improvised performance. It was an unplanned moment of collaboration that became one of the highlights of the evening.
Watching Luisito play offered a different perspective on the relationship between a musician and their instrument. His movements were intuitive, his transitions effortless, and his ability to build upon sounds in real time demonstrated the experience he has developed over decades of performing.
The evening was a chance to share music beyond the stage, exchange stories, and experience the creative process in a more personal setting. From revisiting moments throughout Luisito's career to witnessing an impromptu collaboration, the gathering reflected the value of bringing musicians together and making space for creativity.
RJ Create thanks Luisito Quintero for spending the evening with us and sharing a little of his musical journey.
